メレルのカメレオンなら山やキャンプ場でカブってもある意味あきらめがつきます（笑）それだけ良い靴ってこと。
約30年前、アメリカのアウトドア雑誌「バックパッカー」に「北米で最も機能的で快適な靴」の特集である靴職人が紹介された。彼はカウボーイブーツの職人で、腕試しに作り始めたハイキングブーツが素晴らしいというものであった。
その記事を見つけたクラーク・マティスとジョン・シュバイツアー。2人は勤めていたスキーメーカーからの独立を考えているところで、ちょうど優秀なハイキングブーツを探しているところだった。
彼らは、すぐにその職人に連絡を取り付けることにした。その職人の名前はランディー・メレル。
ものづくりに妥協を許さない職人気質のメレルと、製品化に向けて生産過程のバランスを取るマティスとシュバイツアー。この3人の努力によって名作「ウィルダネス」がこの時に誕生したのである。こうして靴メーカー「メレル」が誕生したのだ。
さらに、元オリンピック選手というマティスの実績を生かしてスキー板やブーツも手がけ、メレルはどんどん大きなブランドへと成長していく。そして、1990年代の終わりから「ジャングルモック」や「カメレオン」を発表していき、不動の人気を得た。
多様化する近年のアウトドア業界をいち早く見据えたメレルの展開は、他のブランドを一歩リードし続けている。この先も楽しみなブランドだ。
