うちにあるコールマンのガソリンストーブは一生使い続けるつもり。
1899年、創設者のＷ.Ｃ.コールマンは、アメリカ・アラバマ州のある小さな町で薬局まぶしく光るガソリン式ランプを見つめていた。コールマンは大学で法律を学ぶ学生であったが、本を読むのさえ苦労するほどの弱視であった。でも、そのランプの下でははっきりと本を読むことができることに喜びを感じていたのだ。
ランプの光に感銘をうけた彼は、ランプのレンタル業を始める。「満足できなければ支払いは不要」と掲げたその試みは人々の評判を呼び大いに繁盛する。
そして1901年、コールマンはカンザス州ウィチタに会社を構えるとレンタル業で使用していた「エフィシェント・ランプ」の特許権を製造元から買い取りさらに会社を大きくしていく。1903年、自社のオリジナル製品である「アークランプ」を発表。
1913年に社名を「コールマン・ランプ・カンパニー」として後の「コールマン」の基礎を築きあげていった。その後も、高性能のランプやガソリンストーブを開発していく。米軍から依頼されて開発した「ＧＩストーブ」は有名な逸品。マイナス51℃からプラス51℃まで使用可能という高性能ストーブにもかかわらず、コンパクトに仕上げてある。
世界大戦が終わると、キャンプや登山などのアウトドアの分野での開発をさらに広げていき今に至っている。コールマンのロゴをキャンプ場で見ないことがないくらいに、世界中で愛されているアウトドアメーカーのひとつになった。
