今やアウトドアファッションでも目が離せないメーカーに！
創業者はポール・ラムフロム。
1938年、コロンビアの前身「ロンビアハットカンパニー」が誕生した。ポール・ラムフロムの娘ガートは10代の頃から会社をサポートしており、1950年代にはガートの夫ニール・ボイルも事業に参加する。
「コロンビアスポーツウェアカンパニー」と社名を変えたのは1960年のこと。フィッシングベストの元祖といわれているフィッシングベストが大ヒットした。このベストはフライフィッシングの愛好家であったガート自らミシンで作ったというのは有名なはなしだ。
しかし、1970年代のコロンビアは苦難の連続だった。ガートは父と夫の急逝を連続して体験してしまう。3人の子供と借金を抱えたガートは会社を売却することを考えたが、コロンビアスポーツウエアカンパニーの評価額はとても低いものだった。売却をあきらめたガートは会社再生の道を選ぶことにしたのだった。
コロンビアの信念である「適正価格の実現」と「多くの人にアウトドアを楽しんでほしい」は、この時代があったからこそかもしれない。苦難の時代を乗り越えたコロンビアは1989年にアメリカ国内のアウトドアウェアのシェアＮＯ．１の座に輝いた。そして1997年には日本法人を設立して、日本企画の製品も多く展開している。機能性とデザインを両立したアウトドアウェアは若者を中心に大人気。日本でのシェアは今も拡大中だ！
